What is sensory loss?

 

Sensory loss put simply is the absence of one or more of the major sensory modalities.

These sensory modalities include

 

• Vision

• Hearing

• Touch

• Taste

• Smell

 

In some cases people with sensory loss can have a combination of sensory losses, e.g. both vision and hearing.

 

The acquisition of sensory loss can take on many forms it can be

• congenital or acquired,

• aggressive or gradual loss,

• occur in varying degrees,

• be combined with other disabilities e.g. intellectual impairment, autism or physical disabilities.
